Dear Listeners,
After the ratings were published, and your endless stream of letters and
calls hit the station, the management of WNEW seemed ready to reconsider
our firing. However, after several painful discussions we've concluded
that neither of the options presented benefits the show in any way.
Knowing that most of our listeners are not available to us at night, an
evening shift just doesn't make sense. And the only day shift they are
ready to provide is a cripplingly short one...so short it would be
incredibly difficult to conduct the show or to continue or build on our
ratings success. It seemed clear that we would only be used temporarily to
help get our replacement show off the ground, by being its "lead in".
We made a very compelling case for keeping the Radiochick show on the
air. Between the never-better ratings, the many advertisers on the station
who wanted the show to continue and voiced that opinion, your 7400 letters
and email sent to the station and your undeniable allegiance to us, I felt
the station would have to have a death wish not to reinstate us. In the
end, though, none of that was really given much consideration.
Here is the most astoundingly stupid thing said to me in an effort to
justify the decision..that was that while we certainly had great success
delivering listeners to the station (in the target demo), our listeners
aren't the same "psychologically" as the listeners of other shows on the
station deliver. In other words, somehow our listeners are inferior. You
aren't less affluent, you aren't less educated, and you aren't less
intelligent (God, no) but mysteriously you have been deemed less desirable
to WNEW. I've spoken with 9 prominent radio programmers and there isn't a
single one who can tell me how that makes sense.
I have about 5000 pieces of my own email that you've sent to me, which I
will try and answer over the next couple of weeks...please just have some
patience while I get thru it all. You can continue to correspond through
Grouchyabe.com..Tom, who runs the site has set up a way for you to send
email...and he will get it to me. We've now begun the process of talking
with other companies, so when we have news, I will break it here at
Savetheradiochick.com and Grouchyabe.com. Our objective is to stay here
in NY.
If you've ever been fired, you know it sucks on so many levels..,
particularly when you can't find a legitimate reason for it. I can't thank
you enough for your incredible outpouring of support, not only during the
last couple of weeks, but during the year-plus we were on the air. You
made the show a success, and you made it fun to do every day. Butch,
Chuck and I are still devoted not only to the show, but to each other, and
we're planning to continue to work together.
